Several Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Mt Kenya region have announced their intention to resign from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and seek re-election under a new party aligned with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, popularly known as Riggy G. This decision comes as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reconstitution process nears completion, setting the stage for a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
The MPs’ decision to align with Riggy G highlights the growing influence of the former Deputy President in the Mt Kenya region. Despite his impeachment in October 2024, Gachagua has maintained a strong following and is seen as a key political figure capable of mobilizing support within the region.
His supporters believe that his leadership can bring about the necessary changes and address the unique challenges faced by the Mt Kenya community.
The reconstitution of the IEBC has been a contentious issue, with delays attributed to ongoing legal disputes rather than inaction by President William Ruto.
As the process moves forward, the MPs supporting Riggy G are preparing to make their move, confident that their new political alignment will resonate with voters. They argue that the UDA has failed to address the needs of the Mt Kenya region and that a new party under Gachagua’s leadership will better represent their interests.
