As the National Assembly breaks for the festive season, MPs from Central Kenya are facing increasing criticism from their local communities.
This wave of discontent follows accusations from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has openly criticized the region’s leaders for betraying their supporters. He has called on voters to reject any MPs who supported his removal in the upcoming 2027 elections.
During a rally in Nyeri County last week, Gachagua emphasized the need for Central Kenya to form its own political party in preparation for the 2027 General Elections. He pointed to the importance of restructuring the region’s political approach to avoid repeating past mistakes.
The ongoing political discord has caused a rift among lawmakers in Nyeri, with many residents accusing their representatives of disloyalty. As a result, MPs who backed the impeachment motion have been keeping a low profile, avoiding public appearances to escape backlash.
In Mathira, a movement is gaining momentum to collect signatures for the recall of local MP Eric Wamumbi. Local leader Samuel Ngari, who is leading the effort, expressed confidence that the Electoral Commission will be re-established by next year, paving the way for Wamumbi’s removal.
